Best Home Care Nominates Lucy Kairumba for the HILDA LAROCCA AWARD

Lucy is a home health aide, who self professes her inability to cook and lack of homemaking skills, and can’t drive, yet she is the most sought after home health aide ever!

I have driven Lucy to the first day of her new client. She is always apprehensive about her abilities. She tells me on our trip that her new client may not like her because she really isn’t the best cook or house keeper. I’ve told her that her clients fight over her because of her intellect. She is in pair with only the most well read, and intellectually fascinating people on this earth.

One elderly woman, who Lucy cared for during her last year of life, was very particular how she wanted her food prepared.  Although Lucy believes that she is unable to cook, she adhered to the client’s wishes and made the client happy.  Over her last few weeks she gently encouraged the client to eat and drink as much as possible.  On her last day, Lucy comforted the family and client until the last breath.  The family was grateful that Lucy was there.

Over the last two years, Lucy has taken care of a client with a debilitating stroke.  Lucy has taught the client to live fully, even though she has lost her independence.  At night, this client has terrible pains in her legs the pains are so bad that the client will cry in pain.  Lucy lies down next to her in bed to comfort her.

Lucy takes an interest in her clients from the moment she comes into contact with them. She is constantly observing their behavior and listens to what they have to say so that she can understand them on a personal level. She takes whatever measures are necessary to ensure that her clients are well cared for.

Since the age of 12, Lucy has been caring for people at home. InAfrica, Lucy learned to care for her extended family.

InAmerica, Lucy traveled the East Coast toNorth Carolina,New JerseyandMaryland, learning the culture as she further developed her skills, working as a home health aide. Lucy feels privileged to be working inAmerica. Over the years, interacting with the elderly “Old Wisdom” has taught her so much.

Lucy has worked at Best Home Care for 9 years. When Lucy expresses concerns for her client, one is immediately struck not only with her concern for the client, but her compassion. Lucy is smart, personable and dependable. Every time she has a concern, she doesn’t hesitate to make that known. Lucy takes on her work as a way of life.

Best Home Care nominates Lucy for the Hilda Larocca Home Care Aide III Award because her purpose in life is helping someone else in need. She makes people feel comfortable, happy, and important until the end of life. Along the way, Lucy learns each individual’s family dynamics and how to bring loved ones together in their time of need creating a positive impact on her own life.
